Micro-Purchase & SAT Rules Explained

What is a federal Micro-Purchase?

Under FAR Subpart 13.2, a micro-purchase is an acquisition of supplies or services totaling $10,000 or less (or $2,000 for construction / $2,500 for prevailing wage services). Government buyers can buy directly without competitive bids using a government credit card.

Why is the Simplified Acquisition Threshold ($250K) so important?

By federal statute (FAR 19.502-2), every federal procurement between $10,000 and $250,000 is automatically set aside exclusively for small businesses, preventing large defense conglomerates from bidding unless small businesses cannot perform.

Do micro-purchases require a SAM.gov registration?

While having an active SAM.gov registration and UEI is highly recommended for payment setup, buyers can technically swipe a Government Purchase Card with unregistered commercial vendors for one-off micro-purchases if an active registered vendor is unavailable.
